How it works

Transliteration maps characters from one writing system to their phonetic equivalents in another. Unlike translation, it preserves the sounds of the original text rather than its meaning.

  • Character mapping — each script has a defined mapping table that pairs characters or character groups with their phonetic counterparts in the target script. Multi-character sequences (digraphs like "sh" or "ch") are matched first to ensure accurate conversion.
  • Bidirectional conversion — you can convert from Latin to any supported script or from any script back to Latin. Swap the direction with the arrow button.
  • Standard schemes — mappings follow widely used romanization standards (ISO 9 for Cyrillic, UNGEGN for Greek, IAST for Devanagari, Revised Romanization for Korean, etc.) adapted for practical keyboard input.
  • Limitations — transliteration is an approximation. Some scripts have sounds with no direct Latin equivalent, and some Latin combinations may be ambiguous. The tool handles common cases but may not cover every edge case in specialized or historical orthographies.
  • Privacy — all processing runs entirely in your browser. No text is sent to any server.
